In a few weeks the Women’s Brick Initiative will be launching our first workshop presented at a LEGO builders convention. We couldn’t be more pleased to be partnering with the wonderful folks at Bricks Cascade to further the mission of the Women’s Brick Initiative!

Overview

On March 1st Alice Finch, JacQueline Sanchez and myself, Shelly Corbett, will be presenting a two hour works shop at the Portland Convention Center. The workshop will begin with a group activity to break the ice and get to know everyone. Then we will break into smaller groups to explore the building, jewelry making and photography stations.

When you leave our two hour workshop you will have acquired new building skills, jewelry making skills and learn a few tips and tricks for better toy photography. You will also take home a small lego build, the lego charms you create and hopefully a few fun photos to share with family and friends. You will also receive a Women’s Brick Initiative 1 x 8 brick for your convention badge! All of this for the low cost of $25.

Alice Finch

Alice is not only a renowned LEGO builder and book author, but also an excellent teacher. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to hang out with Alice and learn building techniques based on her new book: Lego Architecture Idea Book.

Below you will find two samples of the four builds she will be teaching. Come brush up on you’re building skills or simply hang around and talk shop.

JacQueline Sanchez

Do you want to create LEGO themed jewelry? This is your chance to learn from internationally known LEGO jewelry designer JacQueline Sanchez how to cut metal and drill into LEGO blocks to create jewelry. You will learn how to use a jewelers saw to cut metal while creating a minifigure head charm. You will also learn to use a hand drill while creating a LEGO brick pendant. If you have time you will be able to create both of these projects. The pieces you make are yours to keep and show off proudly during the convention : )

Shelly Corbett

As in past photo workshop I will have two to three small dioramas set up to demonstrate basic macro-photography techniques. There will be a variety of backgrounds and minifigures to play with allowing participants to set up and tell their own stories and document them. I will have a few lights, bounce cards and “rain” and smoke available to play with as well. If you need help editing your photos  I can assist you in creating fun photos for your social media platform of choice. Come see how much fun playing with LEGO mini figures can be!

No previous experience is necessarily for this part of the workshop. The only equipment you will need is a sense of humor and a phone to take a few photos!

Who should attend?

The Women’s Brick Initiative’s main goal is to engage women and girls with the multi faceted world of LEGO. Any person who feels that this is an activity they relate to or would enjoy is encouraged to attend. This includes women of all ages, girls over seven, anyone who identifies as female or simply anyone who thinks what we’re doing is the coolest thing since sliced bread! 😀

If you’re a mom with kids under seven, don’t worry, we can help! We will have a station set up stocked with Duplo. Our plan is to have parent volunteers and other attendees help man this area to give moms a chance to explore kid free. Ideally we will create an environment that moms and kids can explore and enjoy together safely.
