Building up Women

Published November 17, 2019 By Shelly Corbett | 0 Comments

During September we had the privilege of teaming up with the Recognized Lego Fan Media site BrickCentral on Instagram for our first collaborative photo contest. The goal of the contest, titled Building up Women, was to encourage toy photographers to create images featuring women in roles traditionally seen as men only.

Today we want to celebrate not only our contest winner but some of the great photography that was created as part of this collaboration. Over 100 entries were submitted and they showcased not only the diversity of our community but the power of women.

This was a fun collaboration with BC and we feel it inspired a lot of great images. It also sparked more than a few interesting conversations here at the WBI.

The Winner

We chose as our winner this great image by Julie Blair. It serves as both a great companion piece to the image chosen by BrickCentral as their winner as well as an image that sends the message that women are already good enough.

During the recent Brickcon and our WBI workshops we had the privilege of working with members of the women’s LEGO AFOL community. I was struck by how talented, competent and capable these women are. They don’t need building up, they simply need the space and opportunity to participate in the lego community as equals.

It was this line of thinking that colored our choice of Julie’s image as our grand prize winner.

More fabulous images

It was great to see our Instagram feed flooded with so many wonderful images of women being awesome. Even though we couldn’t name them all our winners, I wanted to highlight a few of our favorites from the contest.

The Sweetest – The Strongest by Chiara Recarti
Mae’s Arrival by Jonathan Duggins
Firefighter by Ang Chen Ann
Female Pêcheur by Laurent Delcroix
You can be anything you want by Matt Osborne
Piece of Pie by Bert (Brickmione)

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who entered our first photography contest. I was thrilled that we received over 160 entires under the #bc_buildingupwomen hashtag. I attribute this to our amazing sister organization BrickCentral!! Be sure and check out all the entries and show these fabulous photographers some love. Stay tuned because we have another great contest in the works!
